Love Is Inclusive Of Everything Philosophy Essay Love is a kind of thing that can inclusive everything. When we born in this world, love are already belongs with us. Eros, Philia, Storge, Agape which are the four types of love that we can experience in different stages in our life. Love needs two parties to proceed to bring out the valuable and we can learn things in love which is invisibility. Of course, love is wonderful things when it happens, that because it can be inclusive all the bad things even can retrieve or help people. Therefore, I will use the movie The Miracle Box to be the case study to explore those questions. Actually, the movie is reorganizing by a real story which is happen in SARS period. It is a story about Doctor Tse and her husband that how their love affecting people. The four types of love are shown in the movie and it also bring up the other questions are- Is it ring equal to commitment? How important of commitment is? How does agape include Eros, Storge and Philia? Then, I will discuss those things in the following essay. Eros is the relationship of lovers. They can find the different values on each others. They must be contains the unique characteristics or get something similar that to attract the others. It must be contain one of the features of love that may be uniqueness and irreplaceability. In the movie of The miracle Box, except for their religion background, actually it is a kind of factors that can let two persons get together easily. But except for this, the uniqueness is the important elements that for all people. Because every person has their own values, they all have the different intension, self-cultivation; every one got the different background of growth too. Every experience can be changed the mind of a person to be optimistic or pessimistic. That can be affected to the result that people had the good feeling in the first sight. Just like the movie, Doctor Tse and Albert which is her husband, they both had the uniqueness to attract others. As the movie said, Albert thinks that Docto r Tse had a beautiful smile that to let him feels nice and warm. Although physical elements are the first impression for the people to attract in the first sight, however, the spiritual element is the most important that for people to communicate. That may be easy to have similar values, behavior, and thought that have the similar topics to let their distance become closer. In a love relationship, believe is an important elements too. If two persons do not trust each others, this relationship will become no meanings. Trust is a connective thing in hearts with the lovers; it brings the lovely feelings in the relationship. As the movie, Doctor Tse needs to have an internship and leave Hong Kong for few months, because of the distance, they can not see each others for a long time, and this is a challenge for the lovers. Distance, would be one of the fatal of love, because Love cannot get rid of touch. In psychological view, Physical Touch is a love language that parent will touch us as a love expression when we are child. As we had the long period of educated that physical touch is important for people that can be a kind of connective activities for lovers. Because it can be increase the feelings to both persons, if lovers really far away from the others, physical touch cannot bring the function into full play, the optimistic of love will be weaken. Theref ore, it will be a big challenge to the lovers which have a long distance relationship. Love really can inclusive everything? Not many people can do that, maybe Doctor Tse and her husband only is the small number. Many people cannot stride this step to give up the relationship. Actually, love can be a kind of power that to defeat everything, just like Doctor Tse and her husband, although they had lots of difficulties that are hard to overcome, but they thrust that we can tide over, then its become true. It does bring the other topic which is persisting. On the other hands, in the movie mention that rings cannot easy to buy it, because rings have a valuable meaning which is commitment. Is that love equal to commitment? True Love includes the sense of responsibilities, and it is a long term commitment. As rings are the symbol of marriage, it also means the long term responsibilities. That is a heavy meanings with someone that you want to stay with her or him forever. However, in nowadays, rings become simple things in the teenage. They might not think that it is a valuable item with heavy meanings. As we can see on the street or just friends which we know, they actually got a couple rings for each other, they might think that rings are the symbol of couples, but they forgot that is the commitment as the meanings of rings. Therefore, when the scenes of movie remain us the meanings of rings, love needs promises, but at the same time, how many people know that or understand that? Because of the culture of the world become more open, comm itment is not a serious thing already. Just like Doctor Tse and her husband Albert got the original love which is touching enough and let us thinks of this question which is the meanings of rings and commitment. Love can be simple, with no spectacular scale but can feel warm with it. The real love story between Doctor Tse and her husband Albert let me rethink that how many people can experience the original love in nowadays because love also become simple in nowadays society, people might not be jealous of the relationships. Therefore, the movie was very touching that still have someone willing to wait for each other although someone is illness. Its back to the original topic that love can contain everything. Except for the Eros love, Storge which mean parent or family love also can shown in the movie and it brings a lot of discussion in this topic. Storge also is a kind of love which we have when we born in the world, maybe it is the first things we experienced how to love. Storge is the sort of love that you feel for someone who has been a part of your life for a long time, and if they go away, you miss them far more than you ever thought you would. Only parent can let you got that feelings that cannot be replace. However, I think some of the points of Eros can be similar with Storge. When lovers get married to become couples, some of the elements of Eros will transfer to Storge that it cannot be replaced. Because the partners become parents already, he or she will stay with you until death. Marriage is an amazing thing to let couples have the feelings of lovers and being parents. We can also experience it through the movie, or they can observe from family, it may also have this situati on. Or maybe marriage is just a process of Eros became Storge. I think it is a circulation of love which we experience in our life. The third love which we also include in our life is Agape which means god love. It is a wonderful love that people can get much power from this. This kind of love, really can inclusive everything? God Love is not easy to feel it, but when we face the danger, we can felt that this love is all around us, people are easy to show this love to help people who have danger. As we can see in the movie, actually it is mainly focus on the Agape, because the story of the miracle box, except for the love story between Doctor Tse and her husband, it is talking about how greatness of Doctor Tse is in the SARS period. Doctor Tse sacrifices herself to cure many people and lose her life. Except for this situation, Agape also develop in the relationship of Doctor Tse and Albert. It might be one of the reasons that they both have the religion background to let god love become more reasonable in the relationship. However, I think Doctor Tse willing to stay besides with her husband that he got cancer; it s show love can be inclusive the bad things. Just love the Bible in chapter 13 Love is patient, love is kind In the view of god, love must include everything like Eros and Storge; in the movie also shown this messages to us. Eros and Agape can find a proper unity in the one reality of love.' As the case of Doctor Tse, it can really prove that Agape can contain Eros, just because Agape is a universal Eros . SARS period let people rethink of love, this action also affected how the people think. Perhaps SARS in related to the people in Hong Kong, all people would like to concern the incident of this. The action of Doctor Tse influenced many people that let the love separate to many people, let Agape developed its functions, let more people can feel it and step through from the difficulties. And love can influenced people easily, since they both facing the big difficulties. Agape is inherent that we can through many ways to support it. Actually, in this few years was occurring lots of things, and in those incidents, we can experienced the power of Agape. For example 823 Philippine killed Hong Kong tourists, Szechwan earthquake, because of those incidents people show their concern and support to the victims. In the cases of 823 incidents, one of the victim Tsang facing the danger, but she make the right decision that bring the other boy to leave the bus, it is because of love, she thinks th at if she has the ability to rescue one more people, then she did it. In this case, it shows that then we facing the danger, we can develop the power that is come from instinct. Love really is the power that can change many things. On the other hands, the other case of Szechwan earthquake, in this incident it also brings much messages for the people that concern or love can be the motive power besides to those victims. Although, those victims experienced lots of pain, like physical or psychological which they lose their parents, but they still need to continues their life, so love is already become the necessary thing for those victims to cheer up, that what the function of love is. As the main theme of this essay is want to is that live can really inclusive everything, it must be a question that for us to think about it. However, I think love is inclusive things must be base on the people with what experience. If all people think that or all they have the same feeling of love, it would not be able to occur some tragedy by human, the world will not have terrorist and become a wonderful world. Except for the extreme examples, loves really can inclusive most kinds of things which seem to be the movie said. Therefore, many people have this love inside their mind even the heart actually, although they will not express it in every moment, but we know that love are always belongs with us and it is the most greatness thing. Are Leaders Born or Made?

Leadership sets the tone for team development, and this implies its necessity in an organization. Possessing appropriate leadership skills drive a team in meeting its objectives. The means of acquiring such skills may be through nature or developmental programs. The debate on whether leaders are made or born continues to trigger many thoughts, but none has come conclusively. This paper goes through the skills required for effective leadership, and how such skills can be acquired, in an attempt to solve the puzzle of the debate. (b) Leaders are born and made. The question as to whether leadership is genetically acquired or developed remains a debate for decades evoking many opinions. Some scholars are of the idea that leaders are born naturally intelligent, charismatic, visionary, strategic and able to rally and plan for teams around them. Some believe that leadership is an ongoing experience that requires training, development, mentoring and coaching. Some are of the opinion that leaders are both born and made whereby they possess natural intelligence, which is enhanced with education, training, and mentorship. Developing a conclusive statement on this debate requires an understanding of leadership; a leader is an individual who establishes directions for a team of individuals, one who gains commitments from the team towards the established direction, and one who motivates the team to achieve the direction’s expected outcomes (Manktelow and Brodbeck, 2006). A leader needs not to exercise the three elements in a leader’s definition, in the eyes of other teams or fellow leaders. This is so because every team has its objectives and the means to attain the objectives differ amongst teams. The implication is that to fit in different scenarios or teams an effective leader needs some intelligence, which cannot be attained by learning, but that which is a talent or acquired naturally. This is important in understanding the needs of every team and fitting into the needs of every team. In a majority of cases, naturally acquired skills and abilities play a crucial role in developing ones personality, interpersonal, and motivational skills, which motivates one to lead. However, having leadership genes is not all; work experiences, education, mentorship, opportunities, and being a role model, are necessities that craft effective leadership. These are attained through learning, and from experiences. The implication is that leaders learn to lead through education programs, mentorship, experiences, and while playing different leadership roles (Kets, 2004). Successful CEOs, like Bob McDonald of Procter & Gamble, Ginny Rometti of IBM, and John C. Maxwell started with a set of the team leading skills, and associated this with furthering their skills in different colleges. Such drives, ambitions, emotional stability, and extraverted personalities may develop genetically. However, possessing such traits does not mean that these leaders are effective; they learn from experiences and challenges, which demand developmental skills. To prepare for change of roles, they require prerequisite competencies so that they can communicate, shape strategies, solve problems, excel, and have the capability to inspire and motivate others (Manktelow and Brodbeck, 2006). This, therefore, implies that leadership is acquired genetically, but requires to be nurtured if one is to be classified as an effective leader. Having leadership genes is not enough as such intelligence may not be diverse in meeting the needs of different groups. It requires nurturing, development and acquisition of skills so that one becomes flexible in coping with different personalities, and also motivates others (Kets, 2004). (c) Conclusion. Leadership is partly natural, partly nurtured and partly to self ability (Manktelow and Brodbeck, 2006). Most debaters’ in whether ‘leaders are born or made’ overlook the self creative ability and nurturing element in defining leadership. However, being a leader by nature does not make a leader. Additionally, the passion of leadership cannot be achieved through experiences, and other developmental programs; it requires a natural inspiration that comes from within an individual (Kets, 2004). Leadership, therefore, is both born and made. Are Leaders Born or Made The definition of leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Put in even simpler terms, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. He or she is the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow his or her direction (Ward). Which brings us to the most basic and most often-asked question in all leadership development, are great leaders born or made? Some people believe that leaders are born with the set of skills to become a successful leader. While others believe that leadership can be learned and developed through life. With that being said I am sure we have all been told once or more in our lives that leaders are born, not made; that leadership is about ego, and nice guys finish last (Kjerulf, 2009). Well think again my friends, leaders are not born, they are made. What makes someone a good leader is the aspect of discovery. It is the set phrase of a person at their finest whose endeavor is to change something for the better and to expand this forthcoming in others. Many individuals often get caught up in believing that leadership is based on a title or position but in reality this is far from the truth. Leadership qualities are derived by any individual who is enabled and encouraged to express themselves while working with purpose and meaning. Leadership is a process in which leaders and followers engage to achieve mutual goals. We are all leaders and followers at different times. â€Å"Followership† is not a passive role but a dynamic one: Followers ensure that the leader follows the purpose (Owen, 2002). Leadership entails the following components; passion, values, vision, knowledge, drive, and creativity. All components that develop from happiness and delightfulness in terms of something an individual enjoys, if a person is happy, you are going to seek a means to find the greatest good for the greatest number of people, making it possible for the individual to find a way to lead others to their happiness. Every individual has their own area of talent and inclination for success. These attributes, the things that individuals are passionate about, are the reasons why every one person can be a leader in their own means of enjoyment. Take for example a very quite and extroverted individual who has grown up throughout his/her entire life being an individual rather than a leader. He/she stumbles upon something they are madly passionate about, volunteering at animal shelters. In order for these thousands of animals to be saved and not euthanized, these volunteers have to find each and every animal a home within a certain amount of days. Being the extroverted individual he/she is, they reluctantly take a step back, but realize that without their strong passion and desire to lead his/her fellow volunteers; these animals will be put to sleep in a matter of no time. The simple meaning behind this example is that it is not about knowing every piece of advice on how to become a successful leader, or having the proper training, or being born with a set of skills to be able to lead; but rather it is simply about having the passion and strength to lead individuals in a subject that he/she feels so strongly about in order to benefit the most number of people.

Organisational Behaviour Essay

I. Introduction An organisation is commonly defined as a group of people who work together in a consciously coordinated social unit for a shared purpose. Management refers to the activity of controlling and organizing people to accomplish its goals. In today’s increasingly global and competitive environment the effective management of people is even more important to the successful performance of the work organisations. Therefore, the managers need to understand the main influences on how people behave in an organisation setting. Mullins (2008, p.4) defined organisation behaviour (OB) as ‘the study and understanding of individual and group behaviour, and patterns of structure in order to help improve organisational performance and effectiveness’. It comprises a synthesis of a variety of different theories and approaches. Therefore, this essay opens by briefly explore a number of interrelated disciplined to the study of organisational behaviour, before examining the relevance of four main approach to the subject in today’s workplace. Finally, it discusses the purpose of organisations. II. Interrelated discipline to the study of organisational behaviour The study of behaviour can be viewed in terms of three main disciplines – psychology, sociology and anthropology. The contribution of all three disciplines has played an important role to studying organisational behaviour. Psychology is the science and art of explaining mental processes and behaviour. The main focus of attention is on the individuals and explores such concepts as perception, motivation, perception and attitudes. It is arguable that McKenna considers psychology as the key discipline in studying organisational behaviour. There are five key areas in Psychology that can impact on organisations; these are: psychological psychology, cognitive psychology, development psychology, social psychology and personality psychology. Psychological aspects are useful to the practical applications such as job analysis, interviewing models or selection, but it provide too narrow view for understanding of organisational behaviour which ‘is not concern with the complex detail of individual differences but with the behaviour and management people of people’ (Mullins, 2008, p. 7). Watson (2008) defined sociology is more concern with the study of social behaviour, relationships among social groups and societies. It focuses on group dynamics, conflict, work teams, power, communication and intergroup behaviour. It is possible that Watson considered sociology to be the key discipline in studying organisations though he also places emphasis on economics. The structuration reflects the dual effect that individuals make society and society makes individuals. Watson (2008, p. 30) presents six strands of thought applied to his framework for analysis. He further presents six substantive areas applied to the six strands of though in a matrix which are work, society and change; work organisations; the changing organisation and the management of work, occupations and society; work experiences, opportunities of meanings; and conflict challenge and resistance in work. This discipline is valuable to the organisation. It helps managers recognise the relationships between large-scale social forces and the actions of individual. However, Mullins (2008, p. 7) argues that the study of organisational behaviour cannot be studied entirely in single discipline. Although each discipline has an important contribution, it just underpins the study of subject. Indeed, Mullins synthesises interrelated disciplines which are psychology with sociology, anthropology that explore culture and behavioural factors; economics that attempts to provide a rational explanatory framework for individual and organisational activity; and political science that is study of power and control between individual and groups; in his framework for analysis of organisational behaviour. III. Four main approaches In Mullins’ framework, the study of organisational behaviour is concerned with not only the behaviour in isolation, but with interaction among the structure and operation of organisations, the process of management and behaviour of people that are affected by external environment. He applies a number of approaches to organisation: 1. Classical  2. Human Relations 3. Systems 4. Contingency 1. Classical Approach The classical writers considered organisation in terms of purpose and formal structure with attention to hierarchy of management and technical requirements of organisation. Frederick Taylor with the Scientific Management had a major contribution to the Classical Approach. Taylor’s theory was based on the psychological discipline that is concerned with the study of individuals’ behavior. He believed that individuals behave rationally toward financial incentive. Worker would be motivated by highest possible wages by doing highest grade of work. Furthermore, his main objective is to find more efficient methods and procedures for the task design and control of work. Combined with training workers, it was always possible to find the one best way to perform each task. It was criticized that since workers passively do repeated task and paid by result, the less human approach can cause a decline in worker morale as well as in skill requirements, reducing flexibility.Nevertheless,massive productioncompanies stilladopt partially Taylor’s theory in order to maintain or increase productivity. For example, Mc Donald uses the payment method of Taylor’s theory to motivate and encourage the workers. The human who work in fast food restaurant are trained to do a limited number of tasks in precisely. 2. Human Relations Approach Human Relations is a managerial approach based on the consideration of and the attention to the social factors at work and the behavior of employees. Attention is paid to the informal organization and the satisfaction of individual’s needs through groups at work. Elton Mayo (1880-1949) conducted Hawthorne tests on organizations to access productivity. He moved away from scientific beliefs on money and discipline towards importance of group belonging (social study). The tests examined effect of group piecework pay system on productivity. The result is that workers did not necessarily seek to maximize production in order to receive enhanced bonuses but social pressure caused them to produce at group norm level. On the other hand, the research was originally intended to examine effects of lighting on productivity. As a consequence, productivity increased regardless of lighting level was due to workers’ receiving attention. The Hawthorne effect adopted in Human relation approach suggested that good supervision and environment increase satisfaction and other variables affect this, such as structure, leadership, and culture. Unlike the classical thought with consideration of improving productivity, human relation approach ‘strove for a greater understanding of people’s psychological and social needs at work as well as improving the process of management. However, Mullins (2008, p. 29) criticized human relations as a ‘unitary frame of reference’ and oversimplified theories. Even today the Hawthorne experiment is still useful for describing the changes in behavior of individuals and groups, and opened the door to more experiments by other sub-division of approach known as neo human relation. 3. Systems Approach The system approach to the study of organizations combines the contrasting position of the classical approach, which emphasized the technical requirements of organization and its needs – ‘organization without people’, and human relations approach, which emphasized the human fulfillments and social aspects – ‘people without organization’. This approach inspires managers to regard organization as an open system interacting with environment and to view total work but not the sum of separate parts. In Figure 2.5 (Boddy, 2008, p.60), the system consists of a number of interrelated subsystems, such as people, power, technology or business processes system; which add complexity and interact with each other and external environment. It is stated that any part of an organization’s activity affects all other parts because there are areas overlap between various subsystems. Therefore, it is the task of management to integrate these interrelated subsystems and direct efforts of members towards the achievement of organizational goals. The system approach, which is components of interrelated subsystems, provides analysis of organizational performance and effectiveness while the socio-technical approach takesorganization as viewed by the individual members and their interpretation of the work situation. In time of increasing globalization, technological change has influenced on the behavior of people and other parts, thus the whole system. It is valuable for manager to manage the total work and coordinate the technical change and the needs of individuals. 4. Contingency Approach According to Mullins (2008, p. 31), the contingency approach rejects the idea of ‘one best form or structure’ or ‘optimum state’ for organizations. The organizations needs to be flexible to cope with change and managers need to change structure and processes required. This approach influenced many management practices such as market research, PR or strategic planning, which stress response to external conditions. Furthermore, it emphasized that the practice depends on people interpreting events and managers be able to have subjective judgments as much as rational analysis. The contingency approach is relevant to management and organizational behavior. It provides a setting in which to view large number of variables factors that influence on the organizational performance. Hence, it enables process of management to change the structure of organization at the expense of the need for stability and efficiency. IV. The purpose of organizations As defined earlier in this essay, organization is a group of people who work together in a structured way for a shared purpose. It is a task for management to clarify strategy, which tell people how to work, where to go, and what to achieve. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the nature of strategy for the formal organization in order to study organizational behavior. Johnson et al. (cited in Mullins, 2008, p. 350) define the strategy is ‘the direction and scope of an organization over the long term, which achieves advantage in a changing environment through its configuration of resources and competences with aim of fulfilling stake holder expectation’. People dimension of strategy is concerned with people as a resource; people and behavior and organizing people, therefore, influencing behavior of people to achieve success and motivation of individuals are central part of organization’s strategy. Mullins (2008, p. 352) stated that ‘the goals of an organization are the reason for its existence’. It is the desired state for organization to pursue in the future. Therefore, an organization gains its effectiveness and performance through achieving its goal. To be effective, the goals need to be clearly stated and understandable, thus making impossible for people in organization to perceive. It is clearly evident that goal setting promote immediately behavior of people at work and it can be considered as successful tools of increasing work motivation and effectiveness. An organizational goal are likely to achieve when informal goal, which are defined by individual and based on both perception and personal motivation, are compatible with organizational goals. Therefore, it is crucial role for management to integrate the needs of individuals with the overall objective of the organization. Organizational goals are generally translated into objectives that set out more specifically the goals of organization. Drucker (cited in Mullins, 2008) indicated eight key areas for setting objectives, which ‘are needed in every area where performance and results directly and vitally affect the survival and prosperity of the business’. SWOT analysis, which focuses on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats facing the organization, draw out strategic implication.First, Strengths are internal aspects of organization that give it competitive advantage over others in the industry such as size, structure, technology, reputation or staffing. Second, Weaknesses are those negative aspects that place organization at a disadvantage regarding to other. Examples of weaknesses could be operating within narrow market, limited resource, and lack of information. Third, Opportunities are favorable chances arise from external environment which provides potential for the organization to offer new, or to develop existing goods or services. Finally, Threats are external elements in the environment that cause trouble for the organization. For example, change in law, increasing tax or competition from other organizations. SWOT analysis may be used in evaluating any decision-making situation when a desired end results (objectives) has been defined. V. Conclusion In conclusion, this essay has been identified the main approaches to the study of organization. In the first section, it provides a discussion on the interrelated disciplines of Organizational behavior, which is Psychology and Sociology. McKenna stated his idea that psychology has the biggest contribution to the study of subject; whereas Watson placed emphasis on sociology. However, the subject is rooted in multidisciplinary and cannot be undertaken in any single discipline. In Mullins’ framework, he examines a broader view, and then presents four main approaches to the study of organizational behavior. In the final section, this essay has defined the strategy that directs to the goal and objective of organization, and commented on the usefulness and relevance of SWOT analysis in evaluating the strategy.
